I do believe I am now at the end of my rope. I develop small 2 page sites that are used to help sell ads in a local magazine. Kind of like an incentive "Sign up for 4 months and recieve a free website". I live in backwater USA, so 1995 was last year and people think that this is a bargain. These things are usually just a sliced up jpeg made in Macromedia Fireworks, no seo, no nothing. Why do i do this you ask? because the dude that owns where i work pays me 10$ an hour for it and to a college kid that can be alot. That, and i am hasseled by a boss that thinks he knows what i am doing but couldnt write a <div> tag if he had a 13 page manual.

I gained experiance doing this though, and i began understanding more and more... websites, and how i could eventually build my own and profit off it.

After lurking around in this forum for about 2 months i have now discovered how to make my 10 hours of labor a week (potentially) alot more worth my time. I say "potentially" because i have yet to find the time to implement my knowladge into a website. I do however have a niche and the know how to launch articles for it. I came to college, thinking i would be an artist, now i find myself doodling on sheets of paper the hiearchy of the site i have in mind.

The point of this article is to dictate a part of my motivation. My job sucked so bad it made me look at other options.

anyone else out there discover this kind of stuff the same way?

When you're at the end of your rope, the best thing to do is start climbing.....

Absolutely website, and this is from an old guy. :-) Quitting a job, ending a relationship, being forced to move - these are all Death cards in our Tarot. While most people associate the Death card with . . . well . . .death and destruction . . . . that is seldom it's meaning. It means the end of a phase of life you've become accustomed to and more importantly the beginning of a new one.

In retrospect, all of the endings in my life turned out to be the best things that happened to me. What came after was indeed better. Unfortunately, they didn't seem so at the time, it seemed like the world was ending. :-)

And just as an opinion whoever you're working for deserves to move his operation to a third world country, $10/hour is slave labor!

Just curious, but what do you think a job like that should pay?

Website: The same thing happened to me when I started working at my full-time job in December 2003. Was so irritated with it, I decided to go out on my own and start up a web business. Still working at the same place full-time till I can get on my feet, but it's nice to know one day I won't have to work here.

Ohhh man I just knew someone was going to have something to say about that. Before it comes up, please no flames about "third world country," I probably should have said "underdeveloped nation," I am just not patient with P.C. terms, sorry. No derogatory comment intended in any case. :-)

Okay, website said "backwater USA". I live in one of these communities. Nowadays if you're not cutting at least $15-$20 hour, you're supplementing your income with social programs to squeeze by. Even in my economically depressed area, the only jobs that dip to $10 or below are food service industry jobs and such.

yeah, i cant wait to get started on my site. I really hope that i am not just thinking it will work out, more than it actually will. Even though 10$ an hour is literally beans for the amount of stress that place brings my life, it is still 10$ an hour versus the pocket lint that ill have until i start to recieve revenue from my website. Hopefully an income will produce itself fast, but until then i just have to live off what im given. I think i am going to have to take out a loan though for the first bit (im taking one out for school anyway, what is a little more) to cover hosting expenses ect.

have any of you had to go in the hole in order to make money?

I am a junior in college. Last winter break I specifically took an desk job internship so I could get a month long glimpse working for "the man".

The only thing that happened was that I realized I NEVER want to have a crappy job EVER (Whether at Best Buy or assoicate manager of operations for mega-corp Inc.). This has motivated me even more to work towards my PHD and work on my site so I could pay for my education.

You read too much into my question. It really was just a curious inquiry - I never went to school for web design, it just kind of happened one day at my print-based job. I am still trying to get an idea of what my newfound skills are worth.

No problem, just some of the posters here are . . . touchy and have little tolerance for familiarity. :-D

Funny you mention it - that's exactly how I got into this business, I used to be a drum scanner operator/network/DTP tech at a relatively large (for our "backwater" area) printing company. Lots of late nights and motivation got me into it full-time.

It depends how much time you have. Except for webhosting and domain registration, (which in my case comes out to about $.50/day) I haven't paid anything. Everything I needed, scripts, software, .htaccess routines, content, I have either written myself, found open source software or modified examples found on this and other forums. It takes some development cycles but at least it is techincaly free (I would charge my clients $50/hour). If you don't have the time you can pay someone or barter for the same stuff. After 3 months I am now making at least $.50/day and have plans to grow that number 10 times by June.

:) its nice to read all of these similar stories, how many of you guys are in your twenties? Im 22 personally... really im just trying to ride the internet wave before all the kids enrolled in elementary school wind up learning everything i'd ever know before they turn 12.... wont be much of a market after that happens.

Zulufox, where are you going to college?

21 Here.

I am lucky and my parents are paying for my undergrad AND send me extra money for food and board. But when I graduate in a year I am on my own.

This means that I have one year to get my revenue to a level I can live off while I do go for my PHD.

My plan is simple, after finals I will buckle down and work full time to build the largest and best site I can in one year. I am only doing a tiny internship in the summer and next year I have a very light schedule of classes so I can dedicate and push myself to expand and enhance my site during this last year of living under my parent’s financial umbrella.

My goal is that in one year my site will be (1) earning more than $100 a day ($100 is the minimum) from a diverse set of keywords, (2) provide a stable revenue stream (mainly from affiliates like CJ.com instead of Adsense), (3) and have 3 months of living expenses saved up in a special bank account.

If I meet my goal I can work on my PHD full time without the need for a real job (scholarships and loans will pay for school itself) and the PHD will put me in reach for the types of job I want to do.

Thats the plan anyway...

sounds like a good plan, mine is a little more touch and go. Im student-loaning the whole sha'bang until affiliate marketing can replace my monthly allowances, i will then begin to filter the money where i think it is best needed. Zulu, if you have a AIM or Messenger screenname, would you like to mail it to me? It is always nice talking to another college age chum in the same boat.

I think the world is changing, no one wants to work for "the man" anymore, unless he's cool.

a boss is never cool unless he himself is somewhat content of his situation.... It sucks that this is sucha hard attribute to find.
