It seems that the term "web site" is used for when search, yet when i look for "web site" on Google, it asks if i meant to say "website" ... so which is right you think... example:

website hosting

web site hosting

I too have pondered this one and have concluded it can go either way. I googled "website" and got 308mil. hits and with "web site" it gave 800mil. "website" appears to be more specific. You have sponsored links on the side that depend on which one you entered.

The question is not that which is technically correct, rather that which will provide better traffic/ROI. As a wise man once said to me, "Do you want to be Right, or Rich?"

I'm still working on both. ;)

what aboout using both? The search engines would pick you up better but the grammer may look to be wrong to the visitor...

Google uses both but apparently prefers 'website':

site:www.google.com "web site" [google.com]

site:www.google.com website [google.com]

The choice appears to be yours - both variations are now listed in the Cambridge Dictionary [dictionary.cambridge.org]

Illustrative of the problem is this excerpt from a client email to me yesterday:

I guess it would be a mini web site, with a link to a larger website.

I always say Web site (caps on the W) and Internet (caps on the I) But then I am normally incorrect ;)
