I have a client who wants to develop a website that offers current event stories (culled from news sources) that we would repurpose on his site in a categorized manner. I need to be able to have some overall design control but will also need to be able to “file” stories according to their category for archival purposes. In many ways, it seems very much like a blog – and I was considering using Moveable Type as the publishing system. However, I am unsure how much design control this would offer and if I can organize entries by “type” in defined sections of the website. Does anyone have any experience with this or knowledge of a system that would enable me to achieve the desired results? They are hoping to update the site weekly and eventually add another component to it at a later date. Maybe I just need some kind of content management system?

This sounds like something you could do with a straightforward MT installation. You're not asking for anything very complicated. SixApart do have a network of developers who could help out if you needed outside help. I'd contact them directly or put something on their forums for more specifics.

I use MT as a CMS for several sites which are not very blog-like at all. One of the main reasons I chose it was because it gave me complete control over my design templates, unlike a lot of the CMS packages out there. I could make validating XHTML templates and just plug MT in as the engine to insert content into categories (with their own templates).
