I have submitted to alot of search engines
step 1 - don't submit your site, get links

As for tracking, it depends on how many keywords and how often you want to check. If you want to search for a few hundred keywords once a week you can buy a standard package. If you are trying to track the rankings on 5,000+ keywords everyday you should develop your own solution.

A better way of tracking is to look at your logs. My logs tell me what search engines are referring traffic and for what keywords. From this data I then know what to work on. Also if I have top rankings and it is not driving traffic, I know not to work on it in the future.
