So is 1024x768 the new standard? Are the days of 800x600 coming to an end?
I am not so sure they are a great role model (heavy use of tables, iframes and javascript on their pages) but hundreds of thousands of people must visit that website daily so it does make some kind of statement.
Even for many of us who use the higher resolution, there are many that use the left-column on their browsers for favorites (including myself), so anything over 800px is not seen easily.
I'll keep using 740px on fixed-width designs, and leave the 1024 widths for the 'pioneers.'

keep essential content within 720-740 pixels, add extra content to the right of it
So if you have older monitor, you can see good content...
if you have newer, you can see even more...
no negatives, all positive...
and sometimes we have to be innovative, if done with calm balance...
