i know there's a website out there that allows you to see who the hosting company for a particular site is - can someone please tell me what that is?.. thanks!

probably the easiest way is simply do a trace route.

On an XP, click on 'run,' then type cmd then at the prompt:
tracert www.domain-name.com

Try the WHOIS Search (4th down on left) [dnsstuff.com]

Keyplyr found you an excellent tool. A couple clicks and Whois-sc will take you to the actual host. Whois-sc is very powerful, and we often use it for for determining how many virtual domains are residing on a particular server.

Keep in mind that a standard WHOIS lookup (like NetSol) isn't the same thing. A standard WHOIS search often misses the real hosting company, since there are many of us that go with dedicated machines through large hosting companies (mostly for the bandwidth access) and set up the server to reassign NS1, NS2, etc. to our company name rather than the 'real' hosting company.

In such a case, using the sc tool or running a Trace Route will generally land on the 'true' host name or IP address.

The reason this is important is if there are any (hack/spamming) issues with the box, it is the 'true' host that can shut the server down regardless of what shows up as the DNS addresses in a conventional WHOIS lookup.
