I run <snip> w/ about 10,000 unique visitors per day...recently we've been getting emails from a lot of random blogs saying that we put spam on their site. Sure enough, somebody put a url to my site on all sorts of blogs and even a funeral site(!) There isnt a regerral tag on it, so its not like we're inadvertantly paying them for PPCs...we do not use any kind of mass emailing, spamming scripts or anything tricky like that...all of our PPCs are advertising campaigns are with reputable companies

why would somebody do this?...how can i stop it?

thanks in advance

Hi WeezelDS, and welcome to WebmasterWorld! You can't post personal URLs in the forum, please take a few seconds to read the TOS and save our good mods the bother of having to change your posts.

That said, maybe some twit put the hypen in the wrong place? I see that changing the hypen around brings up different sites, maybe they're responsible.

Or maybe a competitor is trying to discredit you in the SEs?

I have been hit by these blog spammers a few days ago. Actually they were using the specific keywords as you mention in your post, but the links they added were totally different: they were not linking to your site.

I think some blog owners didn't look at the actual source code in their commentspam and used a search engine with these keywords to find someone to blame.

If you want to see an example of the spam I received, I can sticky you one.

as for the hyphen...it seems our link shows up w/ many other sites with similar names, so i dont think its narrowly directed at us, but rather more of a shotgun approach by the spammer...

most compaints we get tell us about the problem and say that they have already deleted the post, so its hard to even figure out what is going on...i have to assume that there are quite a few links out there going to us cuz i'm sure a lot of ppl dont even email us...but among the ones that do, i'd bet they are just clicking on the link and looking for our contact page, so i doubt its a typo when they send out the compliant

granted finding out who is doing it is part of solving the problem...but regardless of who is doing it, is there anything i can do to make it stop?

Ya, my blog got hit with this junk immediately once it went online late last year. But it's not just Texas Hold em garbage. We're talking lottsa gambling links and none of it is relevant to my content.

why would somebody do this

It's a link spamming technique that is now marginalized to a certiain degree with the rel="nofollow" tag.

i understand that its spam :) ...i dont see what the spammer has to gain by putting links TO my site on other ppl's sites...it mite up my rankings(or possibly hurt them?), but its pissing ppl off...not to mention i just generally detest spam
