Any downside to using mod_rewrite for simplification?

For example...

I know a lot of people here use this. Is there any downside to a link like

[foo.com...]

becoming

[foo.com...]

It works...just making sure there's no downside before I implement it.

Only downside with shortening a URL is you lose potential keywords in the URL, assuming that helps a little.

Just make sure your host supports it before you do the work. Ran into that problem before.

Thanks diamond. Not a problem. In fact, I want the url as short as possible (the link I used for demonstration just plays an audio file).

Thanks Tig. I tested it and have been messing with it a bit. Got it to work today.

To the mods: You can move this one if you like. I just realized today it should be in the apache forum.
