I just got the virus badtrans. It was a good thing I updated the virus software 5 minutes before I got infected and it was an easy delete. Whats up with getting infected without opening an attachment? Supposedly, if you are in preview mode you can still get infected. Which setting on Outlook 5.0 controls the preview mode as I want to set my outlook so I dont get any new viruses that can also infect your computer without an attachment having to be opened. Thanks.

Apparently there's a patch available that basically disallows attachments with double suffixes... .doc.bat or .txt.pif, etc.

Hunt around Microsoft's site for it. (Good luck, I'm glad I rarely have to search their company site for anything)

Just found it and disabled preview pane. You guys are fast. Thanks all.

Thank god it was an easy fix as some of these viruses are a real pain to get rid of. I cant afford to go down as I have too much work.

I personally never open attachments useless it is one of my own returned and completed, always a .doc form.

Thanks again everybody.

In Outlook Express even if you disable the preview pane, what happens with attachments when you open the message? I know that .jpgs automatically open.

What's another good free email client for Windows? I've been stuck on Outlook Express for so long that I'm out of touch.

Be sure to run a full system scan. Even though I deleted the nasty emails, there were some files hiding in IEs temp folder according to the anti-virus software.

good free email client for Windows?

Eudora, from Qualcomm. You can run it in light mode, with a reduced (but still generally adequate) feature set, or run it in sponsored mode, with full feature set and a small ad window that will pop up when you're using the program. (You can also pay for it, and get all the goodies with no ads, but you asked for "free")

I used sponsored mode, and hardly notice the ads anymore. (And I don't work for the company... I just adore their program)

Netscape communicator also comes with an email client.

We have used Eudora for almost 10 years, although we tried outlook for a while. It was one of the first email programs, for many years free. The Outlook trial lasted around a month, and we have tried many others, but we always came back to Eudora. We use the sponsored mode, no problems, and in many ways is better than outlook, for exampe you can easily redirect and "send again" (useful for emails sent istakenly to a wrong email address), which i believe you couldnt do in Outlook (at least 12 months ago).
