In practice the biggest problem for any lyric site is the fact that someone else owns the copyright to all the lyrics of modern songs. If you choose to host the lyrics on your own site, you will have to obtain an awful lot of permissions, and probably pay steeply for them.
In practice most of the major lyric sites are search engines or directories of some sort. They may look simple, but behind the scenes there could well be a lot of legwork involved. They may look like uncomplicated sites, but that doesn't mean there's an easy way for everyone to start a good one. If there was we would all be doing it.
First off there is a ton of traffic in lyrics, but truth be told, barely any money. Most of the people searching are teens who aren't going to buy anything and most AdSense terms related to bands won't yield much. If the site does become super popular you'll need some dedicated servers as well. Not to mention, I think all the big lyric sites are owned by people outside the US so they don't get sued.
That said, if you still want to do it as a fun project, make a bot that spiders one of the big sites and set it loose. They usually have a page with every band for each letter, etc. Use the link text to insert the artist into the db and then the lyrics and album should be the same place in the html. Nothing terribly difficult to start the database.
