I have followed the instructions on how to include proper meta descriptions so my web site would show up near the top when being searched for in yahoo, google, etc. I have also submitted my URL to a number of sites. However, the site is still not showing up when being searched for. What are some other ways I can "advertise" my site without paying any $$$? Thanks...

OK, so you have your meta descriptions and on-page factors in the bag. If you're a supporter of WebmasterWorld you might want to just double check against Ogletree's excellent thread back in the supporters forum:-

Brett's 12 month guide will also give you some great starting pointers:-

Inbound links from authoritative sites within your niche will bring you high quality traffic and help your search engine rankings.

Inbound links from any other site will help in your search engine rankings although bring you little traffic of real value unless your site is ultra-generic.

Anchor text is a big factor in all SE's at the moment. Have a search on Webmasterworld for hundreds of threads on that topic. You might also want to have a read through the library in the Link Development forum [webmasterworld.com].
