it's not the web Oscar. most people have heard of and know what an Oscar is. can't say the same for webbies.
True, but they do get TV coverage and I don't think there's any other web award that compares. That's not really saying much though, the Golden Web Awards might be better recognised by Joe public.
I got some of my awards posted for users to see that someone works around here who is committed and likes to measure his ambitions too.
Users told me that the Surfer's Choice and the Golden Web I got showed them that others value the work as well and they felt compelled to take the site a bit more serious and acknowledged stability too.
Now this might just be parts of the whole thing, but enough for me to keep developing these sites. And I think it shines through.
Wouldn't that make a site successful already?
"Golden Web Awards..."
And I always thought mine wasn't worth anything...got the 2002/2003 one, is there really some recognition for that one?
When I say recognition, I mean in the sense that people see it on lots of sites and might mention it when asked what web awards they have heard of. I don't mean that it's considered to be a worthwhile award. When I see it on a site I think "amateur" and I tend to revise my opinion of the site downwards. I don't know how common that view is though.
Rosalind,
I'm just curious, but how many extra customers do you think a site would attract if they won one of these awards? Are we talking thousands of new visitors and hundreds of paying customers?
No idea. It all depends on how much TV, radio or newspaper coverage it gets, and there's no way to know this in advance.
