Hi,

For our new Web strategie I have to make a new set of standards and guidelines voor the use of our webserver. Think hereby of objectsize, response time, design standards, etc.

The performance standards are the main thing here however.

Does anyone a place to get some info on appropriate reponse times and things like that?

Kind regards

Welcome to the board Tuckson. I was waiting to see if any experts on the subject in the crowd spoke up.

I did some searching on Google and Wisenut, but was unable to find anything specific. It is very hard to quantify such aspects of performance when the target machine capabilities are unknown.

Thanx,

I'm also a bit surprised noone else answered yet. I understand the problem of the target machine, but I'ld rather turn the things around (presuming you mean my server with "target machine").

To be able to set specs for my server I need to know what it must be able to handle. So first I need to know the performance marks, than I can set requirements for my machine.

People surfing the Internet don't give a **** about what I have running on my site. They just want a quick website. Well, I guess that at least some folks for themselves will have made a definition of "what is a quick website". I am looking for those definitions.

My english is not great, so I hope a make my intentions clear?

Kind regards

My biggest concern is the loading speed. One goal I have is to keep the index page's load speed under 15 seconds with a 56k connection.

The biggest factor is probably what you are going to plug the machine into, I can serve up pages with a 56k dial up, and it really won't matter what the box is. My understanding of bandwidth is limited but I believe you can "flood" a T1 with a 166 mgz machine.

I would add that there are various flavors of perceived loading speed on the client side:
- the time it takes to load anything at all.
- the time it takes to load the space above the fold.
- the time it takes to load the entire page
These times can be altered considerably by tweaking a page's table structure (or CSS positioning).

This [upsdell.com] page has few stats and references to research reports about page load time. This [zdnet.com] page references another study I would be curious about. The actual reports might carry a hefty price tag or be unavailable, but they might give you a few leads on how to search for additional information.

Hi,

Thanx for the replies so far. These indeed give me something to think about.

If any further info is available, I'ld of course be grateful.
