<snip>

The Need for Speed Underground 2 website is one of the best game sites I've seen.

My biggest question: how the heck did they achieved the main tables with partial translucency at the top, rounded corners, overlapping eachother? And the background image...was that accomplished with flash?

All of my sites, no matter CSS, php, or html look so cookie cutter. I'd love to be able to make one like this.

It's not partial translucency - it's a background image at the top of the table that gives the appearance of translucency. All the tricks you've mentioned are in fact just images - it's the Photoshop school of web design.

The main image is indeed flash.

You've got to realise that all their visual prettiness comes at the cost of flexibility and usability, so certainly won't be suitable for most sites. I suppose it could be justified for a game site like this one, though.

The price for all this includes download time. It took me almost two and a half minutes on a 56.6kb dial-up to get the page downloaded. You have to be pretty committed to viewing the page to wait that long, IMHO (but maybe I'm impatient).

thanks for the responses. actually, a game site is what I had in mind, but I'm trying to avoid the oversaturated postnuke template-type blocks, and give it some actual personality. Its harder than it looks...
