How can you check who the host is for a particular site?

you need to run a trace route or similar ..the various "nodes" between you and the site will show how ( for that time..each time you may be routed slightly differently in the middle of the journey ) you have been connected to the site ..
The last two nodes ( sometimes last 3 ) will give the details you need ...
You may have to run a whois to get further details as to who actually owns the host company ...There are various softs that can do this for you ..free and paid for ...plus some sites that will give you the possibility to do this ....also some servers will let you do this from inside your panel..

For complete information try [netcraft.com....] Will give you most everything you'd ever want to know.

Various sites with WhoIs data can give you the information. I don't know whether it's cool to post the link I have or not, but I'm sure you can find a lot of them at Google. I sort of remember that NetWork Solutions had WhoIs info too.
