We're expecting higher winds and some storms where I live, but nothing to severe - but I'm on the west coast. Good luck to all those on the east coast and I second the stay safe.

Twice in a month, that really sucks.

Being from Nova Scotia, we got hit by Juan last fall. It was a category 2, but did cat 3 damage, due to wind dynamics of these storms in the northern lattitudes. Was without power for 8 days. Once a century is enougth for us, for hurricanes.

Yup, been a busy year for us Floridians. This is a big storm, so if they tell you to leave, LEAVE. Just because an evacuation isn't mandatory doesn't mean you shouldn't. Just remember to take your puter with you :)

I'm glad I'm not in Florida during the hurricane season. Regarding backup, we always back up on 4 different servers on 2 different continents. Daily. Be it a hurricane, an earth quake, or a nuke, we're not going to lose any data!

Two? Try 3 ... there is already a tropical depression that has formed in the same area where Frances formed. This depression is expected to develop into a hurricane also.

I'm in Lutz (just north of Tampa) ... gonna be a fun weekend :)

Considering many many internet marketers are based in florida I am wondering what percentage of email spam will be gone if power/internet is out for 2-3 days there :)

The thing I don't get is why everyone runs out like a bunch of idiots and buys bottled water. Go buy Pepsi or something, you have water at home. If you don't have any jugs or bottles, go get some of those and FILL THEM UP. It's cheaper than buying water and in some areas it's your only option since everyone goes to the store and buys 10 gallons, heh.

Home Depot and Lowes are going to report record earnings this quarter. Personally I wouldn't mind a power outage, no internet, etc. Would give me some more time to relax. I'm self sufficient, I don't need electricity.

We got hit by Charley and didn't buy much water beforehand. We should have.

It took several days for water to come back up and you had to boil (not easy when you don't have electricity) it until a few days ago to drink it.

As to soft drinks, sure those may work, but not too sure how tasty they are warm when electricity goes down for weeks.

Yea, if the water goes down and the power goes out, water definitely becomes a valuable commodity. I am an avid soda drinker, LOL, so I always have that too, but - this is FL and it is like 90 degrees out during the day with severe humidity. If the power goes out, the air conditioners do too ;). So, water is the best thing to keep yourself hydrated and healthy.

I believe he was suggesting that people buy the soft drinks, poor the liquid sugar down the drain and then fill the bottles with water.
(Note- It is very important the the filling of the bottles be done before the arrival of the hurricane.)

Soft drinks cost quite a bit more than water (especially if you're basically buying containers), stocking up on bottled (gallon containers) water is more cost-effective.

Also, I would never drink the tab water around here, Ph levels are too high, not to mention other impurities (even before a hurricane).

I don't know if it's practical, but back around y2k (geesh, sounds like eons ago, doesn't it? -- Just 4 years!) some suggested in an emergency that filling your bathtub(s) with water was a viable option for having extra water available. Not sure I'd want to drink water that sat in *my* bathtub for 1-2 weeks, but it could be boiled on a portable stove I s'pose.

Just a thought... I hope no one gets hit hard enough for this email to cross their mind as something worth needing to do, however.

Yes, many of us use the "fill your bathtub" routine but the water is for washing and such, not drinking. The bathtub water is also critical for those on well water since your well won't work without power.

Fortuntely I had some 2 liters of soda that were just about empty so my fridge has got 12 liters of tap water cooling down now. That water is for my pets and such.

I am also on a month old diet so I jokingly consider this a good time to lose even more weight since I can't get a pizza delivery.

I feel sorry for the local vendors and labor day weekend though.

A very basic reason that you want to keep soft drinks to a minimum if water is in short supply is that most of them contain caffine - some more than coffee. Caffine will dehydrate you and that would only make matters worse in the long run.

You can buy empty containers but they often get sold just as fast as the water when a hurricane approaches.

hey all, yea, everyone needs to be safe. i live in ft. myers. and charley was enough for one friggin year. we lost power for 9 days during char, i hope to GOD that does not happen again. got so mildewie in the house, the walls started peeling. all im saying is, my laptop will be right next to me, with all my websites on it :)
