What are some must-have features?
Forgot this:
1. drag and drop of folders and files from local to remote and vicaversa
2. drop down list of ftp accounts, easy one step adding of new accounts, always accessible when you open the program so you don't have to click file->open->account etc.
2a. option to not upload files in folders when they are not newer than the remote files, good for full site uploads.
3. Simple, uncluttered, ideally under 1 meg [you can do ftp with no software afterall, so who needs a 6 meg program to do what is just a automated commandline routine]
4. automatic file type up/download selector, binary/ascii
5. ability to setup easily remote and local startup paths for each account
6. doesn't crash as often as ws_ftp, which has all the above except 6.
7. Free, so you can make clients use it.
8. Easy to setup, so you can teach clients to use it.
You have to hunt far and wide for ws_ftp le free version now, they pulled all download links for that from their website though if you search you can still find a place [snapfiles.com] or two that has it available for download.
GUI cumbersome and not very intuitive
what's the problem? install, open, setup site, click connect, 2 windows open, drag files/folders from one to the other. Is this the new, big, bloated ws_ftp maybe, sounds like it, the old LE is about as basic as a program can physically be.
>> any reason to leave cute?
no reason, any ftp program that you like and that works and doesn't make you do anything hard to connect or create a new site, for example in wsftp it takes me a minute or less to make a brand new site account, and a few seconds to add a different location, say 'includes' to an existing account, just rename the account, change the startup paths, and it's added to your account list.
I keep using this one because even my most tech challenged clients can be setup on that with almost no work, and their off ftp'ing.
