If you are looking to sell advertising space:
You can add Google Adsense to your site if you have alot of traffic for terms that have high ppc prices. If you have a niche site, you may want to contact people and sell sponsered placements

If you want to make money by selling things to people you attract via an ad campaign:
You can use Google Adwords or Overture.

Adsense will probably be the easiest advertising program you can institute on your site. Outside of adsense, there are many options. Creating a site directory targeted towards your niche, selling text and banner ads, selling newsletter ads (if you have one), etc.

There are a lot of options, but Adsense allows you to add advertisers without having to deal with the hassle of having advertisers to "deal with".

You may want to try MarketBanker, or a likewise company. MB lets you sell your website ad space automatically. THey offer a feature where you can filter the ads before they show up on your site. The only downside is, they take a somewhat large percentage out of your earnings.

I need to know if other advertising schemes are better such as banners, affiliates and such. Is webhosting referals the best? etc.

Has anyone got any tales of woah! or woe?

Adsense is bigger, better and easier than most of the others. Also you don't have to worry about being paid. They may be a few weeks late but at least you know Google will not go out of business and you will eventually get your money. For more information about adsense you should read the posts in the adsense forum.

I know about adsense, I'm using it and I've got absolutely no grumbles about it, why would you deny anyone who gives you money?

Just that the cents trickle in if you are not a big boy, what affiliate or other advertising methods are there to boost your capital, website hosting companies for example?
