although im sure its not really their fault, my shared hosting provider came under ddos attack, the site of one of my clients was offline for a few days, sporadic ftp access for me over the period of a week

v hard to explain to a non savvy client. the site is offline, emails from the press asking why, client doesnt care what the reason is. this was days after me getting paid, great.

i now feel like changing hosts ... but is that fair toward my host? they are a cheapo company, but with excellent server control and 15min response time for tech support, without fail

is that like chosing to drive toyota instead of ford simply cause some one crashed into your ford?

and since they will not refund me any money it looks like i will have to fund the new hosting space and transfer costs too! cant really charge this to my client ...

or is there any way of hosting the contents of the site on a back up server? dont think so ...

thanks for your advise

I'm curious - who chose the hosting company? You or the client? If they chose the host, then it's not really your responsibility. At least, that's the way I see it.

i'm not a sys admin, so take my response with a grain of salt, but shouldn't they have had systems or procedures in place to prevent/stop/deter a ddos attack? without knowing more about how big the attack was, shouldn't they have been able to identify the ip addresses that the attack was coming from and block them? a few days sounds like a long time, unless they were completely unprepared for this type of attack.

i wouldn't feel bad about leaving them. they dropped the ball.

i didnt only choose the host, im the reseller

im no sysadmin either, but i think stopping a ddos is very complex, since its coming from a ton of different ip's at the same time, and the ip's you see are probably faked.

the hosting company is a definite cheapo operating out of eastern europe and although their hardware aint that good, they have excellent service, tech support, control panel, very good price and even better reseller program.

tough decision to make

Every single one of us could suffer a ddos attack anytime but you can't blame the hosting company, what you pay your money for is to host your web site or your own dedicated server not for anything else unless the hosting company offer this in their fees.
