It unbelievable that this could be the case, but it is Microsoft. Am I just SOL with WIN ME, so I have to get 2000, go back to 98, or use XP? Is the home version of XP for which a coupon came with this machine lacking in basic funcationality as Win ME appears to be?
Is there any work around on Win ME?
Well, gave up ME. Now trying to resurect an old Win 98 machine. Anytime "view live data" is selected (In UltraDev) it either doesn't find the database, or suggests changing the server. Frontpage was also installedonthis machine. C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\ exists, but it seems PWS may have been installed in C:\Webshare\wwwroot\
Several attempts were made to remove PWS and put it in InetPub instead of the Webshare directory, where I presume UltraDev looks for it, but to no avail. PWS seems rather stubborn.
This sound familiar? Anybody know what might be wrong, or how to correct it?
can't confirm this, but I seem to recall reading somewhere that installing PWS on ME would void your support from MS... :(
Frontpage was also installed on this machine. C:\Inetpub [wwwroot\...] exists, but it seems PWS may have been installed in C:\Webshare [wwwroot\...]FrontPage 2000 doesn't require PWS. It makes disk based webs that don't require FrontPage server extensions...therefore the existence of FP doesn't mean PWS is there...like the old versions of FP. You only need PWS or IIS with FP 2000 if you're going to use things like webbots that require FP extensions. FP 97-98, which are no longer supported by MS, required the PWS regardless.
There are some simple PWS setup instructions here.
Although PWS 4.0 is not supported in Windows Me, you may be able to install it in Windows Me for testing purposesQ266456 [support.microsoft.com]
