I need to add some fonts to my computer so I have more options when messing around with Photoshop etc. Can anyone recommend any good sites to download free fonts? Or even a good low-cost CD that contains 100s or 1000s of quality fonts?

[eknp.com...]
[fontfreak.com...]
[highfonts.com...]

smaller collection by a font foundry:
[fonthead.com...]

A good list of "the best ones":
[identifont.com...]

This is a great site if you want to search by name:
[fontseek.com...]
And it has some links too.

Search google for "free fonts". You will find thousands of resources.

Word of warning

install new fonts in groups, testing Acrobat reader as you go. Some freeeware fonts cause conflict with PDF readers/writers.

A second for Dafonts. Some of their trendy selections are really good.

Ask in the Affiliate forum, I'm sure there are a few people that can point you in the right direction ;)

As an addendum...I love free fonts, but most free fonts are just not the quality you will get if you pay for a commercial font. There is lot that goes into designing a font and I've found in this area (much like the rest of life) you usually get what you pay for. They're fine for grunge effects, but if you are really doing typography you'll want the real italic, bold, and bold italic versions (if not the semibold, condensed, and/or small caps). These don't usually come with free fonts.

With the number of ad agencies who've laid off art directors in the past three years, I've found that I can usually get a ton of fonts from one of them that I know. Somehow they always seem to have them on a disk for freelance projects they were working on. ;)
