Moving a Site From Geocities to Paid Hosting

How do I get rid of the popups?

We have a friend who was hosting on a free Geocities site, with all of the awful popups. We're giving her free web space, but when she moved her site, the Geocities popups followed her. We can't see them in the source code, yet those little buggers won't go away. Does anyone have any idea how to get rid of them? We offered her the space on our server so she wouldn't have to deal with popups.

Sorry if this seems obvious - but curious if you've tried altering something on one of the pages and then veiwing their site to make sure what you are seeing is actually coming from your server.

After she moved the site, she has altered some of the pages on the new server, but still...the popups. I'm wonder if we've missed some hidden imbedded something somewhere.

Just strip out anything that's not HTML, then start adding stuff back in. If that doesn't help, she might have adware (especially if you try it on a different computer and you get no popups).

It's just weird, the source code shows nothing. We've even copied it to notepad, then re-uploaded it. The popups show for everyone looking at the site, which is at least six different people, all in different countries.

Me too.... this is seriously strange. I just did this for a client, without this situation at all....

So your friend has her own domain name now that is running through your dns off of your hosting service or server?...but you brought across the coding from the geocities site and 6 different people still see the popups...? this doesn't sound right at all...
You say you have visually scoured the coding but can't find any referral to "geocities" by running a search...or any kind of ad server urls tuck in places where the sun don't shine...(doubleclick....)?

Has the DNS transferred and you are sure that you are not viewing the files on the geocities server?

Yes, the DNS has transferred, because she was actually just copying her same files to our server. She had a free Geocities site, so there wasn't really a DNS issue, as she moved to her own domain name.

Hmmm, lemme have one other person look at it (I'm not too keen on passing her personal website around), then I'll report back.

Did you do what I said and strip EVERYTHING out except HTML? (counters, javascript, etc.)

You sure the host isn't serving ads? It's a reach but hey who knows.

That is what generates the popups on the site. Have you pulled that and all the code under it out?
