I am about to switch to a dedicated hosting plans. The host says I can host as many domains as I want on my server, but it only comes with 1 IP address. How does that work? I thought each domain = 1 IP.

Any experience with ipowerweb dedicated hosting? Slow, fast, reliable? Any help will be appreciated, thanks!

You usually want more than 1 ip, there are usually at least 5 ips with each server you get, depending on who your going to try and sell hosting too it may matter and it may not matter. In the past I have gotten my ded. servers from hiyacorp and managed. So far managed has been the best, I recommend them. Ipowerweb I hear is also great for normal hosting, I haven't heard anything about their ded. servers, the only bad thing would be the 1 ip from what you have said.

I am planning on hosting my own 3 sites on the server. Probably not going to share it with anybody.

So is it possible to host more than 1 domain with just 1 IP?

With HTTP/1.1 when the browser requests the page it also send the Host: header. This header tells the server which site the browser is requesting a page from. That way one machine on one IP number can serve many different web sites. Most HTTP/1.0 clients also send the Host: header. It is very unlikely for any important user-agent not to support Host:.

If you want to find out more, search for "name based virtual servers".

Thanks py9jmas. Another question, what is the main difference between Managed Dedicated and just a regular dedicated? About how much is it managed? And how much does a managed server cost per month usually?
