The average selling price of DVD recorders is expected to fall by as much as 50 percent later this year as Taiwanese shipments of DVD recorders increase sharply, a government-backed market research firm in Taipei says. Taiwanese hardware makers excel at producing large volumes of IT hardware products at low cost. The ability to produce large volumes of IT products at low cost has made Taiwanese hardware makers the production leaders of many hardware components and devices, such as laptop computers. And Taiwanese companies will take a larger share of the market for DVD recorders as prices fall, Market Intelligence Center (MIC) says in a statement.
there was also some thing a while back about the biggest generic / rebranded DVD player recorder maker ( in Taiwan or Korea or PRC I think ) having invented their own technology that makes current dvd look like Vynil ...and I forgot what they called it ..anyone? Supposedly the first boxes due out in the fall
this may be the reason for the projected price fall ..if the current technology is about to be obselete...
Could this be the up & coming double-layer technology, or are we talking about some other breakthrough?

I think it was in the PRC maybe in Shanghai area ..I do remember that this guy makes about 80% of all the DVD players and recorders in the market place and then they get branded for the big name boys as they come off his production lines ...He was aready cutting his deals with all of them to license back his new technology to them ....

Messing up a CD and creating a 50cent coaster is annoying. Mesing upa DVD and creating an 8$ coaster is REALLY annoying.
HD-DVD is the competing format. HD-DVD discs have a capacity of about 15GB.
There are all sorts of arguments for both sides, but it seems that regardless of the winner, current DVD technology will look like today's recordable CDs in no time.

I don't, and I am even tiring of gagets. Each one need programming, getting to know how to work....

Life is to short, the internet gives more technology than I need, but it brings in a crust :)

1. It also holds 2x as much data as consumer DVD recorders
2. It holds a film at noticeably lower resolution than 70mm film
3. It holds a backup of my hard drive on 15 DVDs, so tape drive is still the only decent solution of archival full backups of large disks.

You want to save all of those precious moments in the highest resolution possible. Photos, home movies, voice recordings, music...the higher the quality the better.
I look back at websites I made back in the mid-90s and just shake my head as the quality of all the photos I so laboriously scanned are now of such poor quality (low res) that I think I'll have to re-scan them some time soon.
I look forward to the advent of new medium to hold my data. It's not just for the sentimental stuff either. Backups of PCs and servers always welcome bigger, faster, longer lasting (cheaper) mediums.
My most recent box came with an 80Gigabyte hard drive, and I found myself asking the same question. Less than a year later, and I'm looking at 160gig hard drives, but I'm gonna hang on until drives in the 300Gig range come out at reasonable cost.
It's a case of fulfilling the old bandwidth proverb "The bigger the pipe, the bigger the medium we'll try and cram down it." The same holds true for storage devices.
I'm hoping blue-ray wins the battle for the new market standard, simply because its a lot bigger.
The value is in the sentiment, not the size surely. (Not all girls seems to agree with me, but what the Hell :) )
