Sniff pop-up blockers

Does anyone know if there is a way for us to sniff a users system/browser to identify whether a user has pop-up blocker on their system? Reason I ask is because we can choose to send users to other sites via a pop-up, or load in current browser. Our preference would be to use pop-up, but for those who have pop-up blockers, we'd like to load them in the browser to that it won't feel as if the user is "stuck" in a loop.

Hi, and welcome to webmaster world. As a rule, please don't post the same topic in multiple forums. If it needs to be moved, the moderators will move it :)

As for your question, I honestly don't believe so, only because there are so many means of popup blocking. Software, toolbars, built into browser, etc. What I DO know is most popup blocking software will not block a 'pop-up' if it's triggered directly from a users click.

There's another interesting thing to note, on a thread not to long again (you'd have to look around, I can't quite remember where), and it linked to a site where you could implement a simple piece of code that would actually circumvent ALL pop-up blockers. Of course, I don't suggest doing this for advertising, but if it's just to open a site a user requested, Go for it.

Another thing some people do is make a note in small print under the link/links, that if they have a pop-up blocker, to hold down 'ctrl' before they click :)

Hi There. Thanks for your advice. I'll look around for that code you mentioned.
