Did i do it the right way?

I recently changed hosting companies today. I read the different threads on the forum how to do it, but they are all different. This is what i did.

I copied all of the files from the old server to the new server, i did not change anything. I then proceeded to change the name server from my domain to point to that of the new server. If everything goes right, things should be ok in the next 24-36 hours...correct?

Did i do it right? Am i missing anything?

Thanks

Sounds good, man.

These days the DNS change starts propagating in about 5 minutes of it being done, so you won't have to wait that long to see the hits coming into the new server, (check the logs for both sites to see the change). Nevertheless, leave all the files on the old server for a week or so, just to be sure.

When I move a site to my host, I usually recieve a url that will act like the "www.domainbeingmoved.com" url.

it is structured like

"http://myhostingservice.domainbeingmoved.com" that allows me to check the operation of the site before I change the DNS

A weird thing just happened, I am gettting hits on my new server now but....my site still has the structure of the old server...the directories etc.

For example, on my new server i access my mail by going to www.newserver.com/mail....but that does not work yet...and on my old server...i access my stats by going to www.oldserver.com/webstat...and the works...but the thing is that i check my logs on my newserver, and i am getting hits there...dont know whats going on.

do i have to wait longer for everything to settle in?

If you're using shared hosting, it's likely that the first host and the second host have set up their mail and stats differently, as in you access different directories to find that information (or maybe have to go through their control panel). I've been with four hosts (not a lot of experience, admittedly) and each one of them did things like this differently.

Of course, if you've got a dedicated server and the new one is supposed to be identical to the old, then the problem is obviously elsewhere . . .

i understand that things work differently between the two host. What i dont understand is why i am getting hits on the new server...but yet things are still running as if they were on the old server.

on the new server, im suppose to access mail by going to domain.com/mail... on the old server...it was webmail.domain.com.

I am receiving traffic on the new server...but when i type it domain.com/mail...i get a 404....when i type in webmail.domain.com, it goes thru...get what im saying? since im receiving traffic on the new server..should it go thru...domain.com/mail?

I see, didn't understand at first. I'd say wait until tomorrow and see what happens. Last time I changed servers, my pages would download but no images. Kind of funny, isn't it?

Funny as long as you don't have to count on your site being fully available for a day or so . . .
