guys this might be a silly discussion but i was just looking at the first page results of google yahoo and a9.com

they all display similar results.

it seems that using some initial investment, and basic SE technology - anyone can launch a search engine showing similar kind of results like google and yahoo.

i wonder if it would be possible to grab a % of the SE market with our own SE?

Most small search engines stay small, from what I've seen.

Well, a9 uses Google results for one. Second, I wouldn't say Yahoo! is using basic SE technology. They only had to buy Ink, AV, & Fast to launch the new Y Search.

However, if you're saying billions is a small investment ;)

Are you by any chance the Ikea guy? Billions mean nothing to you?

(I'd say Bill Gates, but hey, the Ikea guy's richer)

technology is just part of it.

the KEY is attracting eyeballs to the site/destinations, thats where it gets really tricky.

strongly advise you read a book called "The Tipping Point" if you ever wanna take on the big boys.

Don't bother. I'll summarize it for you: big things start small.

Yeah I remember hearing a similar question here before. If I remember correctly, you are hitting different servers with a little bit different results.

I hope someone can answer this better than me.
