I've used keyword advetising before, and also opt-in mailing, but never with less than $2000. I'm a bit stumped as to what would give the most bang for my buck with $250.
the site itself is really just a classifieds site. Users can add 'entries' about pretty much any topic, but it's not just for buying and selling. It can be used to promote, announce, buy, sell, trade, advertise or request anything you want (some entries so far: neighbourhood watch meeting announcements, job offers, jobs wanted, lost pets, visit my site, penpal wanted, ). The UI is nice and simple, no signups required (not even to post) and everything is keyword driven - there are no categories or classifications to choose when adding an entry or searching.
Obviously, on a site like this, it's vital to get people adding content. There's a small competition running at the moment, with a $100 cash prize for the most original entry which might convince users to add an entry but getting them to the site is the first hurdle.
how would you spend $250? I've more or less ruled out adwords, and banner ads. I'm thinking about a sponsored press release on prweb... any other suggestions? It doesn't necassrily have to be on-line advertising.
If so, just print up a bunch of business-card sized flyers. Pass them out. Post them on bulletin boards at grocery stores. Leave them at non-profit organizations, dentists' offices, doctors' offices, local businesses, homeowners' associations, the library, the local chamber of commerce, clubs and associations.
Send press releases to local newspapers, radio stations, television stations.
