WHOIS information

I'm thinking of registering a domain through GoDaddy but I have concerns about the WHOIS information being public.

My question is, can I get away with putting just my initials for the name? I can settle with listing my phone number and address (it's on online phone directories anyway) but not my last name.

Any input would be appreciated!

Godaddy offer a domains by proxy service to shield your whois info.

Yes but I'm trying to look for ways to avoid that $9 fee if at all possible.

Just use your company name for everything. No problem with GoDaddy (I do it)
