Well the title pretty much says it all
I have seen a while ago a thread with a few exchanges about the topic.

Where do we stand as of now?

doing one submission at a time is really time consumming but if it is the only Worthy route...

I don't think the SE's react in a negative way, nor do I think it's worth the time.

All the major se's have crwlers and will find you soon enough without having to submit.

As far as directories go, I would hand submit to important or relevant ones.
