working on a front-page enabled server

help required uploading files

Hi all,

I use DW MX to code my web pages. I've just got a client who has a frontpage enabled site. All of their directories have _vti_cnf folders in them which appear to contain information such as 'last updated, last cached, etc.' in them - there's one HTML file for each file in the parent directory.

My question is, do I need these? Or, more importantly, if I'm making adjustments to pages in the parent directory, how do I make adjustments to the _vti_cnf files as well? Do I need to? What are the consequences if I don't?!

If I create new folders, do I need to create a new _vti_cnf folder for each one?

As you can tell, I feel hopelessly out of my depth, and I hope someone can help me! I'm worried about crashing my clients site, which generally does not lead to repeat business ...!

It all depends on whether the site is using any of the FP server extension functionality or not. If they are you can't use DW to edit and publish those portions of the site. If they're not relying on any of the FP functions then you could delete all the _vti folders and it would not make a difference one way or another. If you're the only one maintaining the site now, then ignore those directories and files.

Thanks for your reply Bill. It appears that some files do use the FP extensions ... I've looked at the Publish Web extension that Macromedia offer, which appears to replicate FP uploading functionality, but I can't get it to work on my version of Dreamweaver MX, unfortunately.
