Number of IPs for hosting

Does it affect speed?

hello, when i signed up for a plan with my web host, i was given two IP addresses which are like

ns1.MYDOMAIN.com
ns2.MYDOMAIN.com

i have noticed that companies like google and yahoo have more than 2 ip addresses for their domains. does this affect speed? or is it for "load balancing" or something?

if i can get my host to give me a "ns3.MYDOMAIN.com" which is an ip address in some other part of the world, would it help the speed of my very busy website?

thanks!

That is not an IP. That is a DNS server [computer.howstuffworks.com]. It servers to resolve your domain name into an IP address.

thanks moltar. so, will having 3 dns servers instead of 2 make my site faster? or perhaps the resolution faster? or more stable?

basically, my question is: what is the benefit of having more than 2 DNS servers?

thanks!

No.

or perhaps the resolution faster?

No.

or more stable?

Quite possibly, if the first two are prone to going down. If the two are always up, however, there's really no benefit.

thanks a bunch bakedjake!

how about if the first two are in US, and the next 2 are in london for example? in this case, if people visit my website from europe can i somehow specify that the dns resolution for them be done through the last 2 domain nameS?

thanks!

To add to what bakedjake had to say,
as long as your dns servers are working
properly, adding more dns servers will
have almost NO effect on the speed of
your site.

You would be better off spending the
money on upgrading your hosting.
