Mac os x VS. (Linux + Windows)

Right now, I've got Linux and Windows on seperate partitions. While the kernel is always stable, all the Linux distros I've tried have been buggy, and I'm always wasting time on trying to get something, like setting up a DLS connection, to work properly. How does Mac os x compare? How are the X programs that matter to Webmasters, like Perl, PHP, etc?

Mac OS X comes with Apache already installed, just push a button to activate. It should run perl and php, locally although I'm no expert.

You also have X11 which puts the Unix X Window system on OSX. For specifics you might ask about these things and OS X inthe Macintosh forum to get a more detailed answer. :)

Yeah. Linux is great, but I always wind up working on getting things setup properly instead of doing the kind of work that pays the bills.

OSX runs Perl, PHP and MySQL as well (PHP and MySQL are simple to install). You can also set up virtual hosting, which is great for developing web sites - I just browse to http://clientname/ while working on a site.

With Mac OS X it's easy to set up Apache, PHP ... a lot of that stuff comes in the box.

I think I might just get a Mac. What about commands like sed, grep, etc? I assume all of that is also included?

Yep. Actually, the guts of the system is FreeBSD Unix (a slightly modified FreeBSD to be exact), so most everything you'd expect to see in a standard *nix install is there.

Among my machines one is 100% RH9
I got rid of MS and installed Linux
that one machine is quite not a young chix :)
Full case Micron built (2000) only a pent3 @450 which was just about top notch years ago

Anyway I chosen the custom install and installed everything
the only requirement was to start MySQL and PHP
the rest works on auto
your only further install will be PHP my Admin that does not come bundled with any **nix flavors

now I have the same setup on a recent home built with modern power and RH flies like a "racing formula"
