probably the most popular free hosting service is geocities, but I choose not to use it. What's your favorite non-geocities service and why?

This isn't answering the question exactly - but my *least* favorite is envy.nu/0catch.com who tend to laden their pages with spyware and sell your registration details off to spammers.

No good will come of using a free host. Geocities is one of the least bad, but I've tried a lot and most of them suck. If you're serious about promoting your website then you'll need to find a *paid* host.. even a cheapie one will be better than a free one.

Tons of decent hosts have entry level "quick start" type plans that are minimal yearly fees - look for reliable hosts, not "free" plans.

I now use tripod lycos for free hosting because they give php/mysql support.

While it's probably true that a serious business venture probably needs proper hosting and domain, sometimes for hobby sites you might want to use a free host.
