Hi all,
I've had a good time reading through the myriad of topics and posts since I discovered this resource a few weeks ago - and have had a few of my questions answered. It's a treasure trove of information, and I intend to keep coming back. But I must say I feel a bit like a fish out of water: my site is a humble hobby website, not commercial. I aim to put up lots of good content, and have started to invest a lot of time into that - so obviously I'm looking for ways to get people to visit my site. But I don't have "competitors", nor a desire to pay for exposure. Is any of you aware of a forum on the web that caters more to my kind of webmaster?
I'd appreciate your suggestions!
Cheers
Rob

Rob,

My situation is identical to yours, and I have been enjoying WebmasterWorld for almost two years.

The overwhelming majority of the information given here is, more or less, applicable to my situation. What are called "competitors" I consider fellow hobbyists, but we do compete for viewers! Paying strategies are only one of many types discussed here, I obviously ignore them completely. And, with less competition, "lighter" optimization is sufficient to produce results.

To answer your final question: I am unaware of any forum that caters to "our" kind of webmaster, though I would be very interested in such a beast if it exists.

Mohamed,
Thanks for your reply! I will certainly hang around - especially since I see you got your own site to PR5: obviously you learned something! My site is new, and still unrecognized by the engines (just the index page crawled). Not sure where to get the external links from (I have a few in the works, though).

You are here already Mohammed - there's a great many such webmasters right here (I have several hobby sites myself, although I also have commercial sites).

As you say, there's little difference - everyone is competing for readers and/or traffic.

The logic set and principles remain the same. The notable difference is going to be in content writing. Not having to try and sell a reader a widget opens up possibilities to get really creative with writing.

Maybe, if anything, what would be useful here would be a content writing forum directed at content/hobby sites as opposed to online vendors. Less of the "copy that sells" and more on creative writing.

You can find lodes of forum’s on the net, most of them topic specific. Even though webmasterworld is geared towards web marketing, you will find people with knowledge in most other areas as well. Stick around and use Google to se if you can find other places that suits your needs.

I like Trillianjedi's idea - any chance of that happening? The people who'd frequent that forum would be less likely to be paid subscribers, after all.

I like tj's idea too! Even though I'm a "combo-master" (see another thread here....), I would appreciate a forum like that.
