Sorry, but the knowledgeable portion of society is not big enough to elicit a change in the status quo for big sites.
I think this all depends on your audience. If you are appealing to a crowd who is savvy in this area, dropping a bunch of cookies on them may have an adverse affect as TheDave points out.
I utilize Opera quite a bit for testing. I have the Cookie Manager in operation and I've set it to ask me each time a site wants to feed me. I'm with TheDave, if you drop a bunch of cookies on me while I'm browsing in Opera, cya!
I believe TheDave is referring to those sites who are clueless about the use of Cookies. I've run across a few that are extremely abusive in their use of Cookies. I clear mine daily. Although I do keep the chewy chocolate chip ones, yum!

Google appeals to tech savvy people and seem to remember that they leave alot to be desired in the cookie area (allthough I'm sure they have some really good ones in their cafeteria). :)
But I know what you mean - you only need one cookie. But when you come down to how long it lasts, how many there are etc I think we get our blinkers on sometimes - we are actually the only people who give a damn about this sort of stuff I think.
I don't have a strong objection to the use of cookies, but I do wonder why some designers feel it necessary to send more than one or two cookies.
I don't really mind if a site sets a lot of cookies, but what does iritate me is when they try to set illegal cookies (e.g. with illegal paths or expiry dates).
When a site does this, Opera pops up a warning and asks if you want to accept the illegal cookie. It looks very unprofessional for a site.
