Webcam dependent on line speed?

My friend have this problem where on a dial up saying hi to his friend in Sweden, they see their pictures frame by frame rather than having sort of a smooth flow as seen on Techtv. I know it can be jerky but not till a wave of the hand you can see the first hand from the first frame up till the last. Is this problem due to line speed, will an upgrade to 328kbps ADSL be sufficient but then the line speed will be shared so probly I'll be down to 128 - will this make me see more smoother movements?
Or are there any other factors.

>Webcam dependent on line speed?

Absolutely. Dialup will be very jerky.

This is not even jerky as it comes in frames, 1st picture then 2nd pic etc....
So then will 128 kbps be sufficient at least for smoother flow.

What kind of cam are you using? Some work lots better than others. What is the processor speed? Enough RAM?

The software used can also make a difference. That stuff on the IM clients is not built for speed.

It's my friend's pc,I think the RAM is at least 128 on a 98se, & probaly P3 800.

I know those 2 factors play a role too, but I dont know the webcam's brand.

Hmmm, but still the main factor would be the line speed right?

I have a 100Mbps fiber optic connection. My friend has a 12Mbps ADSL connection. Using Microsoft's Messenger can still be choppy, so no...software can be a major factor as well.

My SDSL connection runs my company webcam very smoothly. It's a cheapo $30 one that came with software. It optimizes for connection speed. It does this by degrading image quality. Software is probably the best place to start.
