I'm looking at changing hosts, and there is one host that is in the running, but only offers Chili!Soft ASP. I'm not wanting to learn a new programming language at this stage, so I'd like to stick with ASP. Does anyone have an experiences to share with changing from a windows asp server to a chili!soft one?

My primary concern is with the database, as I understand it you can't use an access database, which is fine with me, but how hard is it to convert an access database to one which I can use with Chili!Soft?

Are there any other issues I should concern myself with, in regards to changing hosts?

Thanks.

you can convert from Access to mySql pretty easily.

But, ask yourself this. Why do you want to take the risk of using Chilisoft? Unless you're using the basics of ASP I wouldn't risk it for my site.

Why not find a Windows host with real ASP?

Actually it's not ChiliSoft anymore. It's owned by Sun and it's called Sun One ASP.

It is several versions behind MS's version of ASP so a lot of the things you can do in current ASP Classic and certainly ASP.NET are simply not possible with Sun One ASP.

Here's one example. You can only call built-in COM objects so if you have plans to use any third-party COM objects, like JMail or AspMail, you won't be able to.

If your database calls to MySQL don't use the built-in ADODB.Connection COM object you won't be able to use it. I know nothing about MySQL so I don't know if it requires third-party COM objects so pardon me if I'm raising an undue alarm on this issue. If you're using MS SQL Server I know from personal experience there are very few issues.

In all honesty, and if you can afford it, I'd change to a host that supports MS's ASP.

Ok, thats enough to talk me out of it :)

Is it just me or is choosing a host really, really hard?

Choosing a host took me a long time and I've been on the web since 1993 when I think catalog.com was the only place offering virtual hosting. I've been through them all. I finally settled on a small company on the space coast in Florida that can handle an extremely high volume of traffic, is very flexible, and has tech support that's so easy to access I have the senior network admin's personal cellphone number.
