Intranet search engines

Looking for a search engine

Our company is looking for a way to incorporate a search engine onto our Intranet. The problem is that most of our Intranet's content is not in HTML format. We have migrated our existing files to the Web Server that houses the Intranet and used menu links for our employees to access the files. So my question, IS there a search engine that can be site specific(only for the intranet) and has the ability to search files that are not HTML? Any Ideas? I greatly appreciate anyone sharing their thoughts/experiences/knowledge with me.

I used to have a couple such things bookmarked by they didn't make it through the last bookmark roundup. I'll dig around and see if I can't resurrect them. In the meantime I'm sure some of the others will jump in.

If you have Windows servers, there is Microsoft Index Server that comes with it. You can use that to do intranet searches. It has the capability of indexing Word documents, I believe.
