jpg right-click properties = error

Whenever I right-click on a JPG file and try to open PROPERTIES I get an Explorer Error (along with the dialog box of send/don't send to MS).

This occurs only with JPG's (not Gif, txt, htm, etc) and only for properties (not open, copy, etc). It happens on the desktop and in any explorer file.

The actual jpg files can be from anywhere, and they all display fine within graphics programs.

I'm stumped and googled-out.

I'm using XP in a Dell. I've done the virus scan... anything else, or is this one of those deeply buried radio buttons that I'm not supposed to worry about...

The error window will contain a code you can search the MS KnowledgeBase with - please post it.

On the error dialog box...it says
"To see what data this error report contains, click here."

When I "click here" on the next dialog box, it's says...

----------------
Error signature

AppName: explorer.exe AppVer:

6.0.2800.1106 ModName: ring3.dll
ModVer: 1.0.1200.0 Offset: 00001ada

Looks like some digital camera software replaces the original ring3.dll - I'd search the cab files for it and replace the existing one with the original.

Trying renaming it to ring3.orig or .bak, etc - reboot and see if you still have the problem.

Thanks for your help. I think the problem is solved, or at least, it's hibernating for the moment. I didn't do anything more than reboot and then did not use right-click. Then I rebooted and right-click was fine. (I don't know if it was something to do with that tactic, or... god-knows-what.) I used to mess with all the things in my PC's long ago, but today I don't have time to relearn tricks that I know will be obsolete when the new OS comes out..

Hi BCOL:
I am having the same problem. Whenever I right click on a .jpg in Windows Explorer or any other file browsing app (like 2xExplorer), I get an error and Win Explorer closes. I am using Windows XP Pro and I do not have that ring3.dll file anywhere (I searched for it). Any other ideas for me?

What are the details of the error report that is generated?
