Hi all,

This will seem a very strange question to ask, but can a bot bookmark a website and then show up in a control panel web stats as someone has bookmarked the website?

Cheers,

Neil.

Can bots bookmark? Nope, they just request pages. Sounds like your reporting software might be interpretting the bots activity in an unexpected way - either that or someone has configured their browser to use UA cloaking.

It depends on your stats program's way of measuring bookmarking. Often there is an assumption that a request for favicon.ico in your root directory means that the page has been bookmarked, as IE requests this file when you bookmark. However, if you explicitly link your favicon in your <head> section, a bot may follow the link and request the file.

It should be noted that many alternative browsers such as Mozilla, Netscape 7, Opera 7, Safari, etc. request the favicon.ico systematically to display it in the address bar or tab, so relying on it to measure bookmarking is no longer possible.

Thankx for the reply back guys.

I'm using AWStats, with Cpanel.

Just woundered thats all, I'm getting so much a month thats added to the favourites. so thats why I asked if bots do it as well. Just to give me an idea and not to get my hopes up to high.
