How much text do search engines index?

I've read, more than once, that the major search engines only index about 300 to 500 words per page. Now when I check Google's cache for pages with a lot of text, everything is there. Is the cache the same thing as what's in the index, or are they different?

Never heard such a resrictive claim. I believe that Google is said to index about the first 100 Kbytes of text on a page.

If you read enough, you will run into lots of dubious information :(

100KB?

What a novel approch (or at least a short story :D ).
