Linux reportedly has 1% of the desktop OS market. Not bad for a nascent technology. Technological first movers, China, South America, and other developing nations are leading the way.

Linux will definitely do well in the coming years. I think that once it reaches a critical mass of users things will really start to move. The big developers will start to introduce their consumer / prosumer apps - think Quicktime, PS, DW etc to accomodate demand.
But I think that this is some years away. Between now and then the growing popularity of Linux will be driven by businesses who realise that Linux is way cheaper than a M$ solution.
