Do search engines treat .ORG sites different from .COM sites? What are the pros and cons of having a .ORG site?

I don't think they treat them differently. I have a .org site, because it's for a non-profit organization. It does fine in the search engines, mostly for the usual reasons: Lots of relevent text and a good number of relevent sites that link to us.

No. For search engine all websites are same. But as ORG sites are mostly content based they rank good in search engine, as pat_s already said. ORG sites also get links from other websites very easily.

Try to find the pages from where your competitor website has got links and submit your site to all those websites.
