Any Advice Setting up a Link Portal Site?

Apart from setting up a quick a easy forum site, I am also gonna setup a widget portal site.

I have a content manager for it, however I was just wondering if anyone who has done this has any advice... thanks

Since the post title says 'link portal site' I assume it might be the same as or somewhat similar to a directory.
