A bit of advice. Don't worry so much about Google and use the subdomain you like. Though to avoid confusion among your users, it's best to stick with 'www' unless you really, really need to change it because of server issues.

widget.com/blog would work too. Unless you have a specific reason for it to appear as a seperate site.

am I wrong here?

blog.widget.com and widget.com/blog both go to the same place.
a subdomain is just a redirect to the directory.
On my server when I create a subdomain via the control panel,
it creates a directory with the same name and that is where all the files go.

also, you can't use www if you use the subdomain in most cases.
the subdomain is a third level domain as is www so therefore it usually doesn't work with both.,

blog.widget.com and widget.com/blog both go to the same place.
a subdomain is just a redirect to the directory.

Only if it's set up like that.

But I think, these days, people are used to being given a directory name as part of the address to go to. I would go for that.

I have the feeling (although I've seen no evidence for this) that they might not cope so well with subdomains. I think that the ubiqitus "www." has made people less aware of the first part of the URL. I suspect a lot of people will accidentally type in "www.widget.com" if presented with "blog.widget.com".
