Generating properly formatted HTML email

Currently a cart I manage sends customers receipts in text format. What do I need to know to send properly formated HTML messages?

Concerns about MIME type, encoding, character sets, special characters, escape codes, and client compatibility have kept me away so far. Am I making it out to be more difficult than it is?

Can anyone point me to a good doc on the subject?
