Subsription software options?

Not sure where to ask this one so I figured "general" was a decent place(feel free to move).

I would like to implement a 'subscribers' area on a website. This would be for paying members. I am looking around for a software solution which will control member registration(user name & passwords,lost passwords etc.), page/directory access and preferably is paypal compatible/friendly. I would love to create this myself but my skills are a little lacking with the time frame I have available :(.

Does anyone have any past experience with this type of system, anything I should be aware of/watch out for, and/or do you know of any software options available?
