xp boot problem

cant get into safe mode

weird problem....left pc on for a while..came back to a blank screen..had to reset...booted to a blank screen again...tried repair console after booting from setup disk DISK and running fixmbr and fixboot but didnt help...tried rebooting to f8 and restoring last known good configuration but still rebooted to blank screen....tried booting into safe mode via f8 but i just get the following:

mutli(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\windows\system
32\ntoskrnl.exe

any ideas on where i go from here?

I've been using a tool called Bart's PE Builder as a boot CD for XP. It's got a bunch of tools in it, along with several you can add in. I've found it to be a good rescue disk for XP.

Did anyone change the order of entries in the partition table? You may not see it until you re-boot.

jim...i tried to edit boot.ini but had problems..in the end i just reinstalled windows over the top of itself...
