If I use an h1 tag, but the reduce the size of the lettering to make i more pleasing to the idea, will this hinder se rankings

Aaron, I believe the safest, most common convention for modifying the font size for the tags is to use an external stylesheet.

Some people believe that using H2 is just as effective as H1, but that's an individual decision. Another factor is that different fonts have a different natural size -for example, an H1 in Arial is smaller than an H1 in Verdana, both sans-serif fonts.

I always reduce the h1 heading to a reasonable size and have never noiced this become a problem.

I think external css is the safest in the long run to do it.
